Herodotus for sale for only $20.00.
This is the 1848 Bohn’s Classical Library Edition, literally translated by Henry Cary. It is the sixth English translation of this Greek historian and Cary narrates the faults of the first five English editions of this classic work.
Cicero, and later Voltaire, called Herodotus “the father of history.”
Will Durant writes “he composed the most famous of all historical works, recording the life and history of Egypt, the Near East, and Greece from their legendary origins to the close of the Persian War.”
While much of what Herodotus reports in his history is fantastic and unbelievable, it it, nonetheless, an interesting account of a learned mind from the ancient past. Herodotus did not necessarily believe everything he wrote for he writes “I am bound to relate what is said, though I am not by any means bound to believe every thing; and let this remark apply to the whole history.”
